All about Gothenburg

May 2011:  After a long winter I took a walk "on the bright side" of Gothenburg as it was my first Sunny and blue-skied day since I arrived in March.  During the following spring I watched flowers bloom gorgeously over the canals and loved every moment of it.

Magical Autumn

The awareness of a sense of smell and sight came to light while I watched leaves changing colour and gracefully gliding down to earth in a ever so magically way, these past few weeks. Trees seemed to explode with autumn colour and fragrance. Red bushes on fire, berries glowing red in contrast with newly blue-lit skies. The smell in the air is rich, wood-like with a touch of sweetness. I never thought I would say this, but autumn is fast becoming one of my favorite seasons. The orange and yellow bed spread covering the earth, golden leaves matching the afternoon sun, trees baring gifts of colour. In the air there is a calmness, a crisp alertness, waiting, expecting. The summer rain storms has ceased and now shockingly-green grass lies covered in a blanket of golden delight. Sweden's autumn is one of the most beautiful one's I've ever seen. It´s a magical bliss.

Tjörn

Tjörn is a large island which lies north of Marsstrand.  It is surrounded by smaller islands and the open sea.  Three bridges built together creates a 5km long bridgeway which connects Tjörn to the mainland.  Driving over the bridge offers an amazing view of the arpichilago.  On Tjörn you can find Klädesholmen:  the hearth of the Herring industry.  The Nordiska Akvarell museum is a modern art museum for watercolour paintings which is worth a visit.  Pilane Sculpture valley can be found on Tjörn  (see Sculpture i Pilane, Art(ish) things).
The island of Hamneskär features the lighthouse Pater Noster (Paternoster is also a small fishing village in South Africa and attracted my attention immediately).

Skulptur i Pilane

Our next stop on this cultural weekend was "Sculptur i Pilane" on the island of Tjörn.  We were quite surprised by what we found.  A sculpture exhibition of world class.  A "red-cross" rabbit which lost its glasses, lilies made of glass, a giant trapped in his jersey, a woman balancing in the sky, and sheep grazing around old rock walls.  The sculptures are replaced by different and new ones every year.  Pilane´s setting made me think of Ireland -  I´ve never been there, but the sheep, rock walls and grass hills looked like the picturesque Irish countryside.  Following the "sculpture route" you walk over logs, small puddles, through "man made trees" and real ones.  Ending up on top of a hill overlooking the West coast archipelago.
